Getting Around Seattle During Your Visit

Seattle is compact at its core but spread out across hills, water and bridges, so a little planning goes a long way when you are coming in for a working session. Most visitors arrive through Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, about 15 miles south of downtown. The Link light rail runs from the airport into the city centre and is often the most predictable option during weekday rush hours, when Interstate 5 can slow to a crawl. Rideshare and taxis are widely available too, but leave extra time if you are travelling between roughly 7 and 9 a.m. or after 3:30 p.m.

Practical tips for a smooth day

• Allow buffer time. Traffic, construction and ferry or bridge delays can add unexpected minutes, especially if you are coming from the Eastside across Lake Washington.
• Dress in layers. Seattle weather changes quickly, and light rain is common for much of the year. A waterproof jacket is more useful than an umbrella on windy days.
• Parking downtown is limited and can be costly. If you drive, check garage options near your destination in advance, or consider transit for the final stretch.
• Walk where you can. Many downtown blocks are close together, though some streets are steep, so comfortable shoes help.

Making the most of your time

If your schedule allows, build in a short break between meetings. Downtown offers plenty of coffee shops and quick lunch spots, and the waterfront and Pike Place Market area are an easy walk for a breath of fresh air. Arriving the evening before an early session is often worthwhile, particularly if you are flying in from another time zone.
